Banaras Hindu University to hold residential camp for kids

VARANASI: As many as 300 school children from different schools of Varanasi and adjoining villages will get the glimpse of higher researches and will be able to explore the brighter avenues in the field of science at the five-day residential camp organized at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) from October 26 to October 30.

The camp, 'Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Internship' is being sponsored by department of Science and Technology (DST), government of India.

Giving this information to reporters on Thursday, camp coordinator, Prof Dinesh Chandra Rai of Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU said during this five-day camp, eminent scientists and mentors from various field of science and technology will address the congregation of students in various sessions.

He further added that there will be as many as nine technical session, five institutional visits and 14 interactive sessions for the students during the programme. The DST has prepared a list of 2,100 top scientists and mentors across the country for the INSPIRE Internship propgramme. Out of these, 18 top scientists and teachers will deliver lecture and will hold interactive session with students during the camp. Lectures on biochemistry, zoology, fisheries, botany, biotechnology, molecular and human genetics, geology, chemistry, statistics, agricultural sciences and other subjects will be conducted on the occasion.

Prof Rai further informed that during the interactive sessions, the students will also be taken for laboratory visits in various faculties and departments of BHU.

The camp is meant for class X pass outs and is aimed at promoting Science. "Majority of science stream students think that career prospects for them are confined to engineering and medical field only and fail to find career opportunity in core science, agriculture, geology, geophysics and other subjects.

Through this camp, the students who are yet to venture out of school, will be made aware of the applications of science in contemporary researches alongside job and career options offered by them. This will give an insight for the future career option for them," said, Prof Rai.

Inauguration: Vice-chancellor, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Dr Lalji Singh will inaugurate several facilities at the Sir Sundar Lal (SSL) Hospital premises on Friday. A modular operation theatre, thalassemia day care unit, auto analyser, central laboratory and several other new facilities will be inaugurated on the occasion.
