Ganga's free-flowing spirit is lost, laments Lok Sabha Speaker


VARANASI: 'Bahut Udas behti hai Ganga...', saidLok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar while expressing concern over the pollution in the holy river through few lines of her couplet dedicated to the river.

Describing herself as a foster daughter of Banaras, Kumar said that she always felt connected to the city even though she was not born or brought up here.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the four-day cultural event, 'Banaras Utsav' on Thursday atMahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth (MGKV), she touched upon almost all aspects of the city for which it stands out in the world. Starting from the unique geographical location of the city, she went on to point out the contribution of the city in the field of music, dance, literature and national integration. "I am happy to get the opportunity to speak on the campus of prestigious MGKV that was inaugurated with both the Vedic mantras and ayats of Quran being chanted together," she said.

She said that any event that gives one the opportunity to rejuvenate oneself is rare these days. "What I do as the Speaker, belongs to a different category than the opportunity I am getting here, that is to be a part of something that feeds one's soul. Music, dance literature are always rejuvenating. I am very happy that I got the chance to be in the city to inaugurate such an event," she said while highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the city, including, its immense religious and cultural importance.

MGKV vice-chancellor Prithveesh Nag mentioned the geographical uniqueness of the city. He said that how people from across different parts of the country and different religious and cultural values came to the city as it expanded itself on the south of the Vindhya, assimilating with each other to develop a very unique Banarasi culture.

Mayor Ramgopal Mohale said that the efforts are on to develop the city and maintain its essence.
